Seafood Fortnight, the UK’s biggest celebration of seafood, runs from 5-21 September 2008. This year is set to be bigger and better than ever with a whole host of events planned nationwide and a wealth of support from some of the UK’s favourite chefs and personalities.
The theme of this year’s event is ‘2 a week’, encouraging everybody to eat the recommended two portions of seafood a week, one of which should be rich in omega 3. And with more than 100 varieties of fish and shellfish available in the UK it’s easier than ever to eat sustainably sourced seafood.
A host of well-known chefs and foodies are supporting Seafood Fortnight including: Phil Vickery, Nick Nairn, Brian Turner, Mitch Tonks, Jo Pratt, Sophie Michell and Dr Christian Jessen. These celebrities will be contributing new and delicious seafood recipes to help increase awareness of how easy it can be for everyone to eat their recommended ‘2 a week’.
It’s clear that top chefs love to cook with seafood but there’s no reason to be scared to try it at home. It’s easier than most people think to prepare delicious and nutritious seafood meals, and the Seafood Fortnight website (seafish.org/2aweek) will be packed with information and recipes to fuel the UK’s culinary talents.

Why eat ‘2 a week’? Fish and shellfish are some of the healthiest foods available. They are an excellent source of protein and provide a variety of different vitamins and minerals. Oil-rich seafood is also the best natural source of omega 3 fatty acids, which are proven to help maintain heart health. That’s why the Food Standards Agency recommends eating two portions a week, one of which should be oil-rich.
